In summer, as for the variable-frequency drive (VFD) which is essential to the control regulation of equipment, the hot weather is the biggest problem for the overheat of VFD. A large number of researches and practices have shown that the fault rate of VFD will rise with the increase of temperature, while the service life thereof will decrease with the increase of temperature. When the environment temperature rises by 10 degrees Celsius, the service life of VFD will be halved. For this reason, now let us analyze what are the reasons for the faults of overheat of VFD and what are the countermeasures to tackle the corresponding problems:
1.The ambient temperature is too high
Reason: the internal VFD is composed of lots of electronic devices, when it works, it will generate a lot of heat, especially IGBT will generate more heat under high condition. If the ambient temperature is too high, it also may lead the temperature of internal components of VFD to be too high. Therefore, in order to protect the internal circuit of VFD, the VFD will reported a fault of high temperature and then stop service.
Countermeasure: decrease the temperature where the VFD is located, for example, the air conditioning and fan can be installed or cooling measures can be adopted.
III. What are the matters to be notified when maintaining the VFD in summer:
1.Inspect whether the running state, voltage and current value of VFD when running are in the normal range.
2.Carefully monitor and record the ambient temperature of VFD room, and the ambient temperature is generally from -5 to 40 degrees Celsius. The temperature rise of phase-shifting transformer shall not exceed 130 degrees Celsius.
3.Avoid direct sunlight, moisture or water drops. Summer is a rainy season, so please prevent rainwater from entering the inside VFD (such as rainwater enters along air outlet of air duct).
4. Install the VFD: (1) the temperature in summer is high, so the ventilation and heat dissipation where the VFD is installed shall be strengthened. Make sure that there is no excessive dust, acid, salt or corrosive and explosive gas in the surrounding air. (2) in order to maintain good ventilation, the distance between the VFD and surrounding barrier shall conform to: both sides ≥125px; top and bottom ≥300px. (3) in order to improve the cooling effect, VFD shall be installed vertically, and in order to prevent foreign matters from falling into air outlet and blocking air duct, you’d better add the protective net cover above the air outlet of VFD. (4) when a control cabinet is equipped with two or more than two VFDs, the VFDs shall be installed side by side (ranked horizontally); if they must be ranked vertically, the intermediate diaphragm shall be added between the VFDs so as to avoid hot air, which is coming from the lower VFD, from entering the upper VFD.
